En el año 1836, ante el peligro de que las tropas rebeldes de los carlistas atacasen y tomasen la ciudad de León, las autoridades militares y civiles decidieron reforzar y renovar el histórico recinto amurallado de la ciudad. Con este fin se inicia un proceso de restauración de la muralla, construcción de nuevas estructuras, modernización de las defensas y acondicionamiento de ciertos edificios estratégicos para adaptarlos a los objetivos militares. Estas actuaciones supusieron una gran actividad constructiva, pero por otra parte tuvieron consecuencias negativas para el conjunto del patrimonio arquitectónico de la ciudad, que sufrió importantes pérdidas.
In 1836, faced with the risk that Carlist rebel troops might attack and capture the city of Leon, the military and civilian authorities decided to reinforce and renovate the historic city walls. To this end, measures were taken to restore the walls, to undertake new construction, to modernize the defenses and to make alterations to certain strategic buildings so as to fit them for military purposes. These actions involved a great de al of building activity, but they al so had negative consequences for the city's architectural heritage as a whole, with significant losses being suffered by it.
