'Thinking about learning': exploring the use of metacognitive strategies in online collaborative projects for distance professional English learning
Bárcena Madera, Elena
Martín Monje, Elena

Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid
Filología Inglesa
This article explores the use of metacognitive strategies in the context of online collaborative language projects, on the basis of the authors’ claim that they can unveil spurious conventional assumptions on the general nature of online language learning, and thereby enable informed, self-regulated, and potentially effective individual learning processes. This research is situated in a recently completed pilot project called The Professional English Workbench, which involved task-based group formation and a rubric-based multi-cyclic (self- and hetero-) evaluation process that aimed at eliciting and enhancing the use of metacognition. As explained in the article, this project was undertaken by volunteer students from a number of subjects related to professional English in three Tourism subjects at UNED (according to a tertiary distance education institution which uses a blended learning methodology focusing on online learning via its virtual platform). Both the mechanics of the project and the analysis of the results are presented, making reference to the initial research questions, which were related to the students’ view on the collaborative tasks undertaken and the potential improvement of metacognitive competence in the context of the whole second language learning process.

Tracing intertextuality: Jackie Kay's use of Scots in "From a Drunk Woman Looks at her Nipple"
Calvo Maturana, María del Coral
Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid
Filología Inglesa
This article explores the intertextual use of Scots voices in Jackie Kay’s poem, “From A Drunk Woman Looks At Her Nipple (After MacDiarmid),” which is included in the collection: New Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect (Crawford, ed. 2009). Kay’s poem alludes to numerous sources and different styles of literary and popular Scots: it is most immediately both a homage to Bums and a parody of MacDiarmid’s ‘A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle.’ This article analyses the intertextual elements of the poem, drawing in part on the Corpus of Modem Scottish Writing 1700-1945 (CMSW), which includes a digital version of the Kilmarnock edition of Robert Bums’ Poems, chiefly in the Scottish dialect. This text is at the same time supplemented by an electronic version of MacDiarmid’s poem, available on the Web. Using the Kilmarnock edition and MacDiarmid’s poem as reference corpora, we can compare Jackie Kay’s Scots with that of the other two poets. Kay’s poem was re-contextualised as part of her theatrical piece, ‘The Maw Broon Monologues’, performed at the Tron Theatre, Glasgow, in November 2009, a move which also aligns it with the Scots of the cartoon family, ‘The Broons’. The article considers how the different styles of Scots drawn upon contribute to the interpretation of this highly intertextual performance poem.

The inscription of violence on the culture body: Junot Diaz's "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao"
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2008).
The human body becomes the place where historical, cultural, social, political and gender wounds can be inscribed. The fragility of the human body is one of the main topics in Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2008). In this sense, the Dominican past of the main characters and their new lives in the United States are quite important in their physical and psychological growth. The main characters find themselves in a liminal space from where they have to decide whether to change the negative cultural aspects and adapt to their new experiences as a self in-between or to remain as their old selves. The main characters are frustrated because they do not fit into the cultural canons. On the one hand, violence becomes for them the only way to relieve their frustrations. On the other one, the lack of violence becomes the best way to put an end to their past suffering and to achieve a new identity that fits with the new circumstances. Their final outcome will depend on their decisions.

Dennis Cooper's "The Sluts": prosthetic and performative (homo)sexuality
Férez Mora, Pedro Antonio
Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid
Filología Inglesa
Dennis Cooper's homosexual-inflected work seems, paradoxically enough, to resist queer conceptualizations. It has triggered, instead, readings from ethos as disparate as the avant-garde French literary tradition or the discourse of superficiality of youth cultures. And yet, the 2005 novel The Sluts seems to imply a turning point in Cooper's relationship with the queer imaginary. This study will argue that access to the onto-epistemological core of the novel can just take place by taking into account two of the most important foundations of Queer Theory: the prosthetization and the performativization of eroticism. Drawing on Haraway and Preciado, prosthetization in The Sluts will reveal itself as a metaphorizing drive which will take the understanding of sexuality beyond the hackneyed essentialism/constructivism debate. In turn, sexual performativity, either Foucauldian or Butlerian, will allow Cooper to eviscerate sexuality as desire in the making whose ultimate goal is to affect and to be affected by bordering monads.

Motivation and gender-related variation in EFL receptive vocabulary acquisition in Primary Education
This paper examines the relationship between the receptive vocabulary size and the motivation towards EFL of a group of (CLIL primary learners. The gender variable is particularly addressed here. Specifically, we aim at exploring (1) gender variation in EFL receptive vocabulary size, (2) gender variation in motivation towards EFL, and (3) whether there exists any relationship between motivation towards EFL and the scores obtained by males and females in receptive vocabulary. No significant differences in general motivation and in extrinsic motivation are reported, although females are more motivated. Significant differences are found in intrinsic motivation in favour of females. Also, females overcome boys in receptive vocabulary size but this difference is not significant. Finally, there exists a significant positive correlation between girls’ performance in the 2K VLT and their extrinsic motivation. Some reasons are provided for these results.

Remember the crossers: U.S.-Mexican immigration and the contemporary corrido tradition
Ibarraran Bigalondo, Amaia
The border between the United States and Mexico is today and, since the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, a place of passage of people and ideas. Immigration (legal and illegal) is, no doubt, an essential issue of the reality of this space. This event is definitely marking the relationship between the two countries as well as the identity of the inhabitants of this territory. Moreover, the border has become a culturally hybrid and permeable space, where very interesting artistic manifestations are being developed. The border corrido, in particular, which emerged in the nineteenth century and has evolved both in terms of form and content to the present, is a clear example. The aim of this essay is to observe the way in which the migratory movement that occurs at the U.S-Mexico border is exposed in the artistic production of Los Tigres del Norte, one of the most influential contemporary corrido bands. Their songs reflect the expectations of immigrants, their suffering, etc., and eventually become the voice of the crossers, because, according Teodoro Bello, member of the band, corridos are “los hechos reales del pueblo.”

Conceptual metaphor in Michelle Obama's 2012 re-election speeches
On November 7lh 2012, after being re-elected as the President of the United States, Barack Obama devoted some words in his acceptance speech to the First Lady as his first supporter. The world’s media generally acknowledged this statement as something more than a mere formality, due to the active role played by Michelle Obama, which was considered decisive for the final result of this disputed electoral race. This paper seeks to study the various strategies employed throughout the 2012 US Presidential Campaign by analyzing her official speeches and comparing them to those of her husband and other direct influences. The analysis of persuasive figurative language in a corpus consisting of the speeches delivered in the last four months of the campaign is based on approaches by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and Charteris-Black (2004) and may allow us to identify her tools of political persuasion.

The pattern of severed mother-daughter bond in Toni Morrison's "Beloved" and "A Mercy"
López Ramírez, Manuela
Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid
Filología Inglesa
In Beloved and A Mercy Toni Morrison revisits the mother-daughter plot, focusing on the feminine. She explores the female black slave’s appalling oppression through the traumatic separation of a slave mother from her daughter, which destroys the emotional ties between them and causes terrible effects on both their psyches. Morrison describes her heroines’ identity journey from “desertion” to wholeness. The black female slave’s unspeakable ordeal unveils her humanity and courage, convulsing the patriarchal slave system.

Postcolonial trauma theory and the short story cycle: Edwidge Danticat's "The Dew Breaker"
Starling from the symbolic presence of a scar in Edwidge Danticat’s The Dew Breaker, which illustrates the tensions between wounds and healing, fragmentation and connection prevalent in the text, this article argues for a careful and contextualized look at narrative form in order to obtain a new, more complete view of the meanings in the text, including its political vindications. I offer a detailed definition of the short story cycle as a peculiar ease of the simultaneity of closure and openness, both formally and in terms of meaning, which is aimed at making a contribution to the critical debates on this hybrid genre. When looking at both the sequential and independent readings of the text, the short story cycle proves most suitable to represent the complexity of the Haitian diaspora, and it also offers an interesting and necessary revision of trauma theory from the perspective of postcolonial studies.

Reaction object constructions in English and Spanish
Martínez Vázquez, Montserrat
Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid
Filología Inglesa
Reaction Object Constructions are alternations involving the transitive use of manner of speaking verbs and verbs of signs and gestures (She mumbled her adoration) paraphrased as “express a reaction by V-ing” (Levin 1993). Research on these constructions has been limited to English, often without a thorough discussion of their different elements. A closer look at examples extracted from the Corpus of Contemporary American English shows a wide variety of verbs and objects used in these constructions to denote different types of reported expressive acts. On the other hand, extensive searches of the Corpus de Referenda del Español Actual have revealed the existence of these conflated constructions in Spanish (Ella murmura su incredulidad), where the verbal event denotes the manner by which the second event - the nominalized expressive act -is produced. The data provided in this paper supports recent claims that Romance languages may use some of these “information-packed” constructions the way Germanic languages do.
