AB In regard to the enlightened thinkers of the time, the Spanish Inquisition assumed the role of a social control mechanism, responding to a conservative ideology, international in nature. Although its principal activity revolved around the censorship of books and periodicals, it was not removed from the more or less exemplary trials, whose victims were important enlightened thinkers, such as Macanaz, Campillo or Olavide.
