AB Ever since the unrecorded origin of translation, the latter became a powerful tool for bridging linguistic and cultural gaps and a major vehicle for the spread of knowledge and civilization. Starting from a recognition of this huge debt, the present graduation paper attempts to provide a general overview of major forces that operated in the surge of this human activity as well as to more specifically probe into some of the major recurring issues that punctuate its development both as a craft and as a theoretical discipline.Key words: Translation, historical perspective, translation studies, translation dilemmas, translation typologies
