AB It is not easy to offer a brief outlook of Manuel Alvar's contribution to philology. His huge work comprises an enormous thematic variety (textual edition, literary criticism, the dialectology of the peninsula as well as the insular one or Spanish America, sociolinguistics, history of the Spanish language. ..). He also begins to establish several scientific ways or even incorporates some prevailing European methodologies that were unknown in Spain up to then. It is essential to point out his studies on linguistic geography and his innovation when he makes the linguistic atlas of Spain and America. All his work means the follow-up of the tradition of the 'Escuela Española de Filología' but with many innovative aspects...
