RT info:eu-repo/semantics/article T1 Generation of sheet currents by high frequency fast magnetosonic waves A1 Núñez Jiménez, Manuel AB The evolution of fast magnetosonic waves of high frequency propa-gating into an axisymmetric equilibrium plasma is studied. By usingthe methods of weakly nonlinear geometrical optics, it is shown that theperturbation travels in the equatorial plane while satisfying a transportequation which enables us to predict the time and location of formation ofshock waves. For plasmas of large magnetic Prandtl number, this wouldresult into the creation of sheet currents which may give rise to magneticreconnection and destruction of the original equilibrium.
