Escuela de Ingenierías Industriales K1 intertextuality, influence, Cassandra Clare, Paradise Lost, A Tale of Two Cities, “Annabel Lee” K1 intertextualidad, influencia, Paraíso perdido, Historia de dos ciudades, AB The postmodern dictum that all texts are in fact inter-texts inevitably developing frompreexisting references seems to be particularly apt to describe the modus operandi ofcontemporary popular writers who have built entire fictional worlds on previous works ofliterature. Such is the case of Judith Lewis, better known by her pen name CassandraClare. A close look at the novels she has published so far will unveil a complex network ofintertextual connections that range from textual references to plot and characterparallelisms. Her Shadowhunter Chronicles comprise a world in which Milton’s demonsare destroyed by Dickensian characters and Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “Annabel Lee” tells atragic but real love story that ultimately leads to a series of murders and necromancy. Thepresent graduation project traces this meshwork of allusions and intertextual ties in Clare’sbest-selling young adult fiction.
