Subsequently, in the midst of the transition to democracy, and after launching the 1978 Constitution, society demanded the democratisation of Televisión Española (TVE), which needed to consolidate within the Estatuto de la Radio y la Televisión of 1980. Nevertheless, the two main parties at the time, UCD and PSOE, agreed that this regulation would not imply any significant step forward in terms of independence and plurality and this media would still be under control of Moncloa. With Felipe González (PSOE) coming to power in December 1982, the country entered a new stage with challenges to meet, such as the modernisation of the institutions and the society, the consolidation of the welfare state, the industrial restructuring or the international expansion, among others. Televisión Española, as the media with the greatest social influence at the time, had a lead role in the realisation of these tasks and the Government counted on the necessary tools to ensure that the message sent would benefit their interests. Along this dissertation, the mechanisms PSOE counted on to control TVE are analysed, as well as the political implications thereof, during the period between their access to power in 1982 and the break of the broadcasting monopoly of RTVE in 1989 through the terms of office of the different managing directors of the public entity. Thus, this research work addresses the use of an important player, as the small screen was, by the Government for the development of the country on the basis of audiovisual, press, archival and bibliographic sources.
