Osteoarthritis often becomeschronic, and conventional treatmentshave demonstrated only modest clinicalbenefits, without lesion reversal (2). Cellbasedtherapies have shown encouragingresults in both animal studies and afew human case reports. We have recentlypublished the results of a pilot clinicaltrial designed to assess the feasibilityand safety of osteoarthritis treatmentwith bone marrowYderived mesenchymalstromal cells (MSCs) in 12 patientswith chronic knee pain unresponsiveto conservative treatments and radiologicevidence of osteoarthritis (3). Thepatients were treated with autologousexpanded bone marrow MSCs by intraarticularinjection (40 106 cells), andclinical outcomes, including evaluationsof pain, disability, and quality of life, werefollowed up for 1 year. Articular cartilagequality was assessed by quantitativemagnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T2mapping (3).
