The gender-specific reading of partition genocide facilitates a discussion on various forms of violence that targeted women and the symbolic meanings behind these acts. In addition, the paper explores the notion of nation as “mother” and its ideological implications for female citizens. Furthermore, the paper highlights the issue of abducted women, the recovery and rehabilitation programmes undertaken by the state to rescue them, and the working ideology behind the state’s actions. Arguably, the paper, taken in its entirety, allows for a more nuanced understanding of how in the name of religious/national pride, women’s bodies and sexuality were, and are, either regulated or exploited in patriarchal societies. It is through women that an ethnic community or nation-state demonstrates its sense of purity and honour.

This aspect is not only important but also vitally necessary, as achieving adequate oral performance on a daily basis is crucial for teachers of English. This study addresses emotional stressors in the form of anxiety or frustration, as well as mistakes related to their mother tongues’ influence, which affect the demographic and, hence, determine the use of appropriate pedagogical strategies. In order to tackle these two issues, a classroom intervention was performed with a group of twenty students enrolled in a Bachelor of Teaching program. Before attempting any pedagogical innovation, a semi-structured questionnaire was conducted to gather data about their difficulties and motivations. The results led to a twofold intervention; first, sets of pedagogical strategies were tailored to improve their attitudes towards participation in oral English instruction; secondly, an array of participatory activities were designed and implemented in order to correct their most common oral mistakes. The success of the intervention indicates that improving classroom engagement is possible by working on the student teachers' oral competence; this, in turn, promotes improvements in attitude and increased confidence in oral skills.; La producción oral de los futuros profesores españoles de inglés representa un aspecto lingüístico de enorme importancia que requiere una atención minuciosa.
2016-01-01T00:00:00Z"It was perfect": Desire, corporeality, and denial in Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan"Calvo Pascual, Mónicahttps://uvadoc.uva.es/handle/10324/227402021-06-30T08:12:37Z2016-01-01T00:00:00ZThe acquisition of a corporeal sense of self, central to the formation of a balanced identity, is often barred in the Western world by women’s internalization of somatophohia. Drawing on theories of gender and corporeality, my contribution focuses on the representation and implications of eating disorders and deliberate self-harm practices as portrayed in Darren Aronofsky’s feature film Black Swan (2010). Protagonist Nina Sayers is rendered as a perfectionist workaholic whose compulsions include scratching and peeling off her skin. Her yearning for professional success is but an extra burden over and above her virginal sexual repression and her claustrophobic family environment. My main contention is that, beyond the psycho-sexual thriller cliché and the rather obvious metalepses between film and ballet, Aronofsky’s movie can be read as a denunciation of the lethal struggle some women undergo in their desperate attempts to transcend both their corporeality and the negative values attached to the female body, i.e. as that which clutters the mind with hungers and desires, barring them from “perfection.”; La interiorización del odio a lo corporal por parte de algunas mujeres en el mundo occidental a menudo dificulta la adquisición de un sentido corpóreo del yo, tan importante para la formación de una identidad equilibrada.
En el presente artículo, analizo la posibilidad de que la derivación de estructuras de núcleo final a partir de estructuras de núcleo inicial se lleve a cabo mediante el movimiento de remanente de FV y Fv a una segunda posición de Especificador de v y de T, respectivamente (al margen del movimiento más básico de O a un segundo Especificador de v).; This paper provides two arguments against vP-pied piping as an appropriate mechanism to derive head-final structures; on the one hand, arguing that floating quantifier structures in an OV language like German give evidence that S(ubject) must raise (i.e. merge internally) on its own in Spec,T, and not as part of vP; on the other hand, the trigger of the internal merge of S in Spec,T cannot seem to be accommodated to the full vP. The present work is part of a wider research project in which I contend that S is the first constituent to be processed and linearised in both head-initial (SVO/SAuxVO) structures and head-final (SOV/SOVAux) structures, in accord with the claims in the recent work of Antisymmetry theory by Kayne (2011/2013). In this paper, I suggest that the derivation of head-final structures from head-initial structures be accomplished through remnant movement of VP and vP to a lower Spec of v and T, respectively (aside from the more simple movement of O to a lower Spec of v).
2016-01-01T00:00:00ZAn analysis of interlinguistic influence from Chinese into English in Direct Object realization of Chinese-English bilingual childrenYuan, QiantingFernández Fuertes, Raquelhttps://uvadoc.uva.es/handle/10324/227362021-06-30T08:12:33Z2016-01-01T00:00:00ZWhile null objects are possible and pervasive in Chinese, their occurrence in languages like English and Spanish is rather restricted. In the case of developing grammars, the omission of categories that characterizes the initial stages of acquisition also affects the object category, together with inflection, subjects, determiners, etc. The main goal of this article is to investigate the nature of interlinguistic influence from Chinese into English in a set of Chinese-English (C-E) bilingual children with a focus on bilingual children’s early direct object (DO) realization in English and to provide new empirical evidence for the postulation that the development of the two languages is interdependent. In order to do so, a comparative study has been carried out: the English production of C-E bilinguals is analysed with regard to DOs and, in order to determine whether the possible overproduction of null DOs is due to influence from the other first language (L 1) (i.e. Chinese) or is rather part of the developmental process, a double comparison is established with English monolinguals (E monolinguals) and with Spanish-English bilinguals (S- E bilinguals). The results show that C-E bilinguals’ performance in terms of DO realization in English is significantly different from that of both E monolinguals and S-E bilinguals and that the latter two groups behave similarly. This finding supports the conclusion that, although null DOs occur in the initial stages of child language acquisition regardless of whether the adult grammar allows them (Chinese) or not (English and Spanish), in the case of C-E bilinguals’ English development, interlinguistic influence from Chinese into English has a negative effect as reflected in null DOs being produced at a higher rate and until later in life.; La omisión de objetos es una propiedad gramatical muy frecuente en chino, mientras que en inglés y en español su uso está más restringido.
2016-01-01T00:00:00ZIs punctuation comparable?: The case of London, Westminster School MS 3 and Paris, Bibliothèque Sainte Geneviève MS 3390Cruz Cabanillas, Isabel de lahttps://uvadoc.uva.es/handle/10324/227372021-06-30T08:12:34Z2016-01-01T00:00:00ZThe aim of the present article is to discuss the scribal punctuation practice in one of Richard Rolle’s epistles, Ego Dormio, found in two manuscripts that are genetically related: London, Westminster School MS 3 and Paris, Bibliothèque Sainte Geneviève MS 3390. The analysis of samples seeks both to reveal regular patterns of use concerning punctuation symbols in each text and to test the extent to which there is a correlation between one scribe’s use of punctuation marks when compared to the use employed by the other scribe. Although there is a quantitative exploration of the data, the method of analysis also considers contextual information in the description of each punctuation symbol to identify their functions. In addition, earlier works on medieval punctuation in the identification and categorization of symbols along with their already attested functions (following mainly Lucas 1971; Parkes 1992 and Zeeman 1956) have been employed. The results of the study will be compared with these functions in order to contextualize each scribal use of punctuation symbols within the tradition of Middle English manuscripts.; El objetivo del presente trabajo es analizar las prácticas de los escribas en materia de puntuación en dos manuscritos que contienen una de las epístolas de Richard Rolle, Ego Dormio'.
