<title>Ferrovia, estrutura e dinâmica de cidades feiras no interior do território brasileiro:</title>

<summary type="text">No final do século XIX, a ferrovia adentra o território do Nordeste brasileiro, chegando a duas cidades marcadas pelas suas feiras livres, tanto de produtos de consumo geral como de gado bovino: Feira de Santana (Bahia) – Estrada de Ferro Central da Bahia (1876) e Caruaru (Pernambuco) – Estrada de Ferro Great Western Railway Company of Brazil (1895). Consideran­do que a ferrovia se constitui um elemento técnico moderno, pergunta-se: Quais as principais alterações e consequências na dinâmica das cidades feiras, ao se tornarem cidades Pontas de Trilho? A linha férrea impulsiona a expansão do tecido urbano em sua direção ou constitui-se uma linha limítrofe ou uma barreira? Estas indagações norteiam a pesquisa apresentada. Assim, este artigo analisa a relação entre a ferrovia e a estrutura e dinâmica das cidades mencionadas. Desse modo, a pesquisa revela que, apesar da ferrovia ter provocado alterações na estrutura e na dinâmica dessas cidades, há diferenças na natureza e na intensidade das mudanças ocorridas.

<title>The Historical Interrelationship of Railways and Cities from an Urban Viewpoint.</title>

<summary type="text">This paper offers a conceptual overview of the state of the art relating to the historical interre­lationships between railways and cities from the point of view of town planning, covering the good century and a half that there have been railways in the Iberian Peninsula. It addresses both urban and railway history, reconsidering major issues in this relationship. These are: 1) the tracks of lines as they cross cities and the role they play in urban life, 2) the passenger buildings of stations, seen as a focus of urban centrality, 3) the developing complexity of cities and rail­ways, together with the installation of new road and port infrastructures, and 4) the problems emerging from urban ex­pansion in the final third of the twentieth century, mostly after the restoration of democracy, specifi­cally the question of the limited permeability of rail tracks and the interpretation as a social barrier of the physical barrier thus constituted by the railway. An idea that railways are a problem grew up within this historical interrelationship.

<title>Los trabajadores de la construcción en la Compañía de los Ferrocarriles del Norte de España (1856-1864)</title>

<summary type="text">Este artículo tiene por objeto analizar las condiciones de los trabajadores que intervinieron en la construcción de la línea principal del ferrocarril del Norte de España.  Al efecto, es revisada la bibliografía contemporánea y de época y, como aportación respecto a otros estudios, se realiza el volcado exhaustivo de los documentos internos de la compañía. Los hallazgos de la investigación destacan que la ferroviaria pretendió organizar el trabajo a través de distintos modelos ensayados con suficiencia. Al discutirse cómo se implementaron las relaciones laborales, en las conclusiones se significa que la decisión de la empresa de realizar grandes economías en el alzado del ferrocarril quedó trasladada a problemas que interfirieron y encarecieron el desarrollo de las obras.
