<title>Comparative analysis of the musculoskeletal health in Poland and Spain: a cross-sectional study using the International Classication of Functioning, Disability and Health</title>
<link>https://uvadoc.uva.es/handle/10324/75181</link>
<description>Background: The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) is the framework&#13;
for describing disability. The aim of the study was to make an ICF-based comparison between&#13;
musculoskeletal health in Poland and Spain.&#13;
Methods: A comparative study was conducted to identify cross-cultural differences between Poland and&#13;
Spain in the prevalence of ICF entities from the brief ICF core set for post-acute musculoskeletal&#13;
conditions. A total of 840 people were included in the study. Information was recoded into ICF qualifiers to&#13;
obtain comparable data.&#13;
Results: Significant differences in functioning were found between the two samples, with a higher&#13;
prevalence in all the ICF entities for the Spanish sample. Similarities were found in the ICF components&#13;
‘Body Functions’ and ‘Environmental Factors’, with the most prevalent ICF entities being ‘b280 Sensation of&#13;
pain’ and ‘e225 Climate’ respectively. For ‘Activities and Participation’, differences were observed, with&#13;
‘d430 Lifting and carrying objects’ being the most common for the Spanish sample and ‘d450 Walking’ for&#13;
the Polish sample.&#13;
Conclusions: A theoretical application of the ICF has been empirically tested for the first time, a milestone&#13;
in the development of this research methodology. Differences in the prevalence of ICF entities showed a&#13;
better musculoskeletal health in the Polish sample.

<title>Advanced therapy medicinal products for eye diseases: Goals and challenges</title>
<link>https://uvadoc.uva.es/handle/10324/65344</link>
<description>The concept of advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) encompasses novel kinds of medicines for human use that are based on genes, cells or tissues. These intend to offer not only regeneration, but complete functional recovery of diseased tissues and organs using different strategies. Gene therapy, cell therapy and tissue engineering are the main areas in which promising advanced therapies are emerging. The eye is a very complex organ whose main structures, the&#13;
cornea and the retina, play a pivotal role in maintaining normal vision, as severe alterations in these tissues can lead to blindness. Ocular tissues are starting to benefit from ATMPs by fighting against the enormous complexity and devastating potential of many ocular diseases. However, developments arising from this field of work face important challenges related to vectors to deliver drugs and genetic material to target tissues, suitable biomaterials to prepare cell scaffolds and cell stemness, among others—not to mention the complicated legislation around ATMPs, the complexity in production and quality control and the absence of standardized protocols. The purpose of this Special Issue is to serve as an overview of the current progress in the application of cell and gene therapies, as well as tissue engineering to restore functionality in diseased ocular structures, and the challenges they deal with in order to get to patients.

<title>Optimization of human limbal stem cell culture by&#13;
replating a single limbal explant</title>
<link>https://uvadoc.uva.es/handle/10324/65275</link>
<description>Cultured limbal epithelial stem cell transplantation is a clinical procedure used to regenerate the corneal&#13;
epithelium in patients with limbal stem cell deficiency. The protocols used to expand limbal epithelial cells&#13;
in vitro need to be optimized, since the scarcity of human ocular tissue donors is limiting the potential use of this procedure. Here, we describe a method to consecutively expand a single human limbal explant. With this method it is possible to obtain up to three limbal epithelial primary cultures from the same explant, thus increasing the efficiency of the in vitro cell culture.
