El tratado de Reunificación, por el cual se realizó la unión de las dos Alemanias, marcó, entre otras muchas cosas, las líneas generales de la transformación del parque de vivienda de la antigua Alemania Oriental, tanto en 10 referente al régimen de tenencia, como en 10 relativo a su estado físico. Desde entonces un gran número de viviendas ha cambiado de manos y ha sido objeto de numerosas obras de mejora, dando lugar a un enorme cambio que ha estado dirigido hacia la disolución del carácter público de esas viviendas y su privatización. Junto a esto se ha producido un movimiento de población desde el Este al Oeste que ha provocado la aparición de altísimos porcentajes de vivienda vacía en determinados barrios de la Ex-RDA

Since them, a large number of houses has changed their owners and has been the object of a great number of improvements, producing a huge change that has been directed towards the dissolution of their public status, and naturally to their privatization. In addition to all these factors, a very important movement of population was produced, from the east to the west, provoking at the same time the show up of a very high percentage of empty houses in some specific areas of the Ex-DDR
