Suicide is one of the most recurrent themes in Pérez Galdós novels. Among all the books that make up Los Episodios Nacionales, La estafeta romántica is probably the one in which this interest in suicide is best shown. With an epistolary structure, this work brings up the psychological and sociological reasons behind Mariano José de Larra's and another three fictional characters' suicides. This article examines the vital circumstances of these four characters in order to match them with the suicide typologies proposed by the sociologist Émile Durkheim. Considering as well the importance of this work's historical background, we also analyze the possible symbolic implications of each of these four characters' suicides.
El suicidio es uno de los temas más presentes en las novelas de Benito Pérez Galdós. De todas las obras que componen Los Episodios Nacionales, La estafeta romántica es quizás la que mejor muestre este interés. Con una estructura epistolar, la obra plantea las razones psicológicas y sociológicas que pudieron haber motivado el suicidio de Mariano José de Larra y el de tres personajes de ficción. En este artículo se analizan las circunstancias vitales de los cuatro personajes para poder clasificarlos según la tipología de suicidios propuesta por el sociólogo Émile Durkheim. Teniendo en cuenta la importancia del trasfondo histórico de la obra, se plantean también las posibles implicaciones simbólicas del suicidio de cada personaje.
