La Participación de las Familias en la Escuela

Abstract

La participación de las familias en la educación de sus hijos es un derecho básico en las sociedades democráticas. En el sistema educativo español, dicho derecho se ha ido reflejando en un gran número de leyes a lo largo de los años. Uno de los principios fundamentales de la educación es que la responsabilidad recae principalmente en los padres. Sin embargo, muchas veces se necesita un cierto apoyo externo. Por este motivo, la escuela supone un complemento para dicha misión educativa, aunque no suple la responsabilidad de los padres. Para que toda esta tarea conjunta entre padres y profesores consiga llegar a su meta final, el desarrollo integral del niño, es importantísimo que ambas partes dialoguen, aúnan esfuerzos, asuman responsabilidades y se coordinen de la mejor manera posible. Sin embargo, los padres no siempre están dispuestos a intervenir en los centros de sus hijos, o los docentes abiertos a esta colaboración. Por otra parte, existen numerosas vías de participación y propuestas de mejora que ofrecen diferentes autores y especialistas en el tema, para llegar a construir verdaderas comunidades de aprendizaje participativas. Entre los objetivos que se persiguen en este trabajo queremos destacar el papel de los profesores y los padres, observar las diferentes situaciones de participación en otros países, averiguar las razones que frenan dicha participación, ofrecer algunas alternativas de cambio y centrarnos en algunos grupos más desfavorecidos. Sin embargo, la realidad nos muestra que en la mayoría de los centros, y debido a numerosas razones, la participación de las familias es muy baja y solo centrada en el intercambio de información, sobre todo en las familias que se encuentran en riesgo de exclusión social; y que se necesita del esfuerzo mutuo de padres y profesores para poder cambiar la situación actual en los centros.

Family involvement in children’s education is a basic right in democratic societies. In the Spanish Education System, that right has been reflected in a large number of laws over the years. One of the fundamental principles of education is that responsibility lies primarily with parents. However, some external support is often needed. For this reason, the school is a complement in this educational mission, but does not replace the role and responsibility of the parents. In order for this joint task between parents and teachers to reach its final target, that is, the child’s integral development, it is really important that both fractions engage in debate, join forces, assume responsibilities, and coordinate in the best possible way. However, parents are not always willing to get involved in their children's schools, whereas at other times it is the teachers who are sometimes not open to that kind of collaboration. On the other hand, there are numerous ways of participation and improvement proposals supported by different authors and specialists in the field, aiming to build real participatory learning communities. Among the objectives that are pursued in this paper we want to emphasize the role of teachers and parents, to observe the different situations of participation and involvement in other countries, to find out the reasons that hinder such participation, to offer some change alternatives, and to focus on certain more disadvantaged groups. However, the reality is that in most educative institutions, and due to numerous reasons, family involvement is very low and is only focused on the exchange of information, especially regarding families that are at risk of social exclusion; and it therefore takes the mutual effort of parents and teachers to change the current situation in schools.
