La inercia creada por los procesos institucionales consolidados en los primeros años de andadura de la Comunidad Económica Europea ha favorecido la posición privilegiada de la lengua francesa en las instituciones comunitarias. Sin embargo, a principios de los noventa, esta situación de privilegio se veía amenazada por el imparable avance del inglés. Ante esta situación, los líderes galos iniciaron una nueva estrategia de defensa del francés basada en la salvaguardia de la diversidad lingüística que fue secundada por Alemania y por el resto de los Estados miembros. Con el fin de evaluar el éxito o fracaso de la nueva estrategia, el texto realiza un análisis diacrónico y cuantitativo del uso institucional del inglés en la UE y contrasta los datos obtenidos con los correspondientes al empleo institucional del francés y, en menor medida, el alemán.
The inertia created by the institutional processes consolidated during the formative years of the European Economic Community favoured the privileged position of the French language in EU institutions. However, in the early nineties, that privileged position was threatened by the unstoppable advance of English. Because of this, French leaders launched a new defence strategy based on the safeguarding of linguistic diversity that was followed by Germany and the other Member States. In order to assess the degree of success or failure of the new strategy, the text makes a diachronic and quantitative analysis of the institutional use of English in the EU, and contrasts the data obtained with that of the institutional use of French and, to a lesser extent, German.
