La dote monástica en las comunidades religiosas femeninas de Évora en el periodo post-tridentino

Abstract

El periodo post-tridentino se caracterizó por un aumento de vocaciones religiosas femeninas, traducido en la proliferación de monasterios y conventos, una vez que las nuevas fundaciones se adaptaban con una mayor facilidad al modo de vivir monástico defendido por Trento y por la coyuntura contrarreformista.También en Évora las opciones de vida religiosa se multiplicaron a partir de mediados del siglo XVI, realidad que en la ciudad se manifestaba ya desde el primer cuarto del siglo XIV. Este es el contexto en el cual nos proponemos apreciar el reflejo del estatus social de los progenitores/dotadores, el importe de la dotación y cómo estaban formadas las dotes en el devenir de las comunidades de clausura que optaban por ingresar a sus descendientes en Évora durante el periodo moderno.

The post-Tridentine period was characterized by an increase of female religious vocations, which was materialized by a proliferation of monasteries and convents; the new foundations were more easily adapted to the monastic ways of live defended by Trent and the Counter-Reformation environment. In Évora, the options for a religious life multiplied from mid 16th century on, a reality that was becoming evident in the city since the first quarter of the 14th century. It is in this context, that we propose a reflection on the influence of the social status of the parents / dotadores and the amount and composition of dowries in the life of Évora’s cloistered communities where those parents/dotadores chose to put their descendants during the modern period.
