The aim of the article is to explore the motif of the garden in Spanish turn-of-the-century literature. Approaching an analysis of poems by Juan Ramón Jiménez or Antonio and Manuel Machado in relation to Spanish modernist texts in prose, one may detect certain bipolarity in the treatment of the analysed motif: opposite the symbolic and artistic garden emerges a garden of irony which systematically tends to question the components of the symbolic diction. The article suggests a possibility of using the category of modernist irony proposed here for all the Spanish modernist movement.
El artículo se propone examinar el motivo del jardín en las letras finiseculares españolas. Al acudir a un análisis de poemas de Juan Ramón Jiménez, Antonio y Manuel Machado, puestos en relación con textos en prosa del modernismo hispánico, se llega a detectar una bipolaridad en el tratamiento del motivo analizado: frente al jardín simbolista y artístico se erige un jardín irónico, que sistemáticamente tiende a poner en duda los componentes de la dicción simbolista. El artículo sugiere la posibilidad de aplicar la categoría de ironía modernista aquí propuesta a todo el movimiento modernista hispánico.
