This study is focused in one of the most important factor of the international policy of the Hispanic Monarchy in the Mediterranean at the beginning of Charles II reign: the ottoman military expansion in the eastern Mediterranean, above all in the island of Candia, in hard dispute between Venetians and ottomans from 1645. This conflict affected to the Hispanic-Venetian diplomacy, that was characterized by the Spanish Monarchy' attempts to avoid the loss of this bulwark of the Christianity and to prevent a peace treaty between the Republic of Venice and the Turks, which would leave in serious risk their Italian lands to the ottoman military invasion.
El presente estudio se centra en uno de los factores esenciales de la política internacional de la Monarquía Hispánica en el Mediterráneo a comienzos del reinado de Carlos II: la expansión otomana por el Mediterráneo oriental y, en este sentido, su principal foco durante estos años, la isla de Candía, en disputa entre venecianos y otomanos desde 1645. Este conflicto influyó en la diplomacia hispano-veneciana, caracterizada durante este periodo por los intentos de la monarquía española por evitar la pérdida de este antemural de la Cristiandad e imposibilitar un tratado de paz entre la República de San Marcos y Constantinople, que dejase expuestos sus dominios italianos a la invasión otomana.
