El punto de partida de este artículo es el análisis de una selección de pasajes literarios que documentan las epifanías de Aquiles en la Tróade y en el litoral septentrional del Mar Negro, concretamente en la isla de Leuce. En la Antigüedad estos dos enclaves fueron identificados respectivamente como la tumba y el destino postumo del héroe, y en ambos casos los textos cuentan que había un culto local de Aquiles. Sin embargo, la existencia de dicho culto solo ha podido ser comprobada en la isla de Leuce, donde se atestiguan numerosas inscripciones votivas en honor al héroe desde finales del siglo VI a.C. El estudio de estas inscripciones sugiere una caracterización cultual de Aquiles centrada en las funciones oraculares y en algunas atribuciones particulares relacionadas con el mar. Estos dos aspectos también están presentes en los relatos míticos sobre las apariciones de Aquiles, lo que nos lleva a sugerir que tales historias pudieron contribuir a fomentar o reforzar la creencia en un poder real del héroe en dichos enclaves.
The starting point of this article is the analysis of selected literary passages documenting Achilles’ epiphanies in the Troad and in the Northern Black Sea coast, particularly in the island of Leuke. In ancient times these two sites were identified respectively as the grave and the posthumous destination of the hero, and the texts confirm that both had a local cult of Achilles. However, the existence of such a cult has been proved only in the island of Leuke, where a numerous votive inscriptions in honor of the hero was found, the most ancient ones dating from the late 6th century B.C. The study of these inscriptions suggests a cultual characterization of Achilles centred on oracular functions and on some particular powers related to the sea. These two aspects are also present in the mythical accounts of the epihanies of Achilles, which leads us to suggest that these stories could help promote or strengthen the belief in a real power of the hero in these places.
