La desamortización de Godoy en Cantabria

Abstract

Se trata en el presente trabajo de profundizar en el auténtico significado de la desamortización de Godoy. Por un lado, conocer el efecto real que tuvo este primer embate desamortizador sobre el patrimonio de la Iglesia. En este sentido se ponen en cuestión las cifras ofrecidas por Richard Herr. Eso en base a la diversa tipología de las instituciones afectadas por el decreto de diciembre de 1798, cuyas propiedades, en la mayoría de los casos, no estaban integradas realmente en las eclesiásticas. Por otro lado, toda la operación desamortizadora había tenido diversos antecedentes en forma de desamortizaciones parciales y locales promovidas desdé mediados del siglo XVIII por entes locales, algunos de ellos también eclesiásticos, para solventar problemas financieros, construcción de infraestructuras, etc. Por último, la "desamortización de Godoy" tuvo en realidad múltiples direcciones -que luego van a ser desarrolladas más sistemáticamente por los gobiernos liberales- como son la desamortización eclesiástica y algo, que podría asimilarse a la desvinculación. Sin duda, sin la intervención napoleónica la historia de la desamortización española hubiera tomado otros rumbos. Todo ello, aplicado al caso de Cantabria.

The purpose of this work is to make a profund study of the real meaning of Godoy's disentailment. On the one hand, to know the real effect that the first disentailment attack had upon the Church's inheritance. In this sense, the numbers offered by Richard Herr are questioned. We base our study on the diverse typology of the institutions affected by the decree of December 1798, whose properties, in most cases, weren't actually integrated in the ecclesiastic ones. On the other hand, the· whole disentailment operation had a different background in the shape of partial and local disentailments promoted since the middle of the 18th Century by local entities, some of which were also ecclesiastic, to settle finantial problems, construction of substructures, etc. Finally, "Godoy's disentailment" had, in fact, multiple directions -which later are going to be developed by the liberal governments- like the disentailment of private individuals, the own ecclesiastic disentailment and something that could be assimilated to detachment. There is no doubt that without Napoleon's contribution the history of the Spanish disentailment would have taken different directions. All this, applied to the particular case of Cantabria
