En el artículo se examinan, desde mediados del XIX hasta la mitad del XX, las iniciativas de política social ejercidas por algunas de las empresas mineras que se establecieron en la provincia de León. Se evalúan los presupuestos que fundamentaban dichas prácticas, la legislación que en algunos casos imponía su desarrollo y los principales campos de actuación: vivienda, educación, alimentación y previsión. Las conclusiones apuntan hacia la escasa efectividad de lo realizado, debido en gran parte a lo disperso de las actuaciones y a la escasez de recursos económicos que las sociedades mineras dedicaron a estos fines.
The article examines, from the mid 1800's to the mid 1900' s, the social policy initiatives exercised by some mining companies established in the province of León. We evaluate the budgets which founded these initiatives, the legislation that in some cases taxed their development, and their aimed fields of action: housing, education, food and health care. The conclusion points out the limited effectiveness of what was accomplished, due mainly to the fact that profits were thinly distributed, and to the limitation of the economic resources that the mining companies dedicated to these purposes.
