La venta de oficios públicos es un hecho común durante las dos centurias centrales de la Edad Moderna. Dentro de lo que fue esta práctica se distinguió, al menos cuantitativamente, la venta de escribanías. Venta que se vio condicionada durante el periodo de peste que asoló a la mayor parte de España entre 1596-1602. En tomo a este contexto gira la actividad de la Cámara de Castilla, al tramitar el proceso de solicitud y otorgamiento, por vía de merced, de gran parte de las escribanías enajenadas durante estos años.
The sell of public offices was an usual habit during the two central centuries of the Modem Age. Within that practice, the sell of clerkships was very outstanding, at least quantitatively. This sell was very influenced by the Black Death which destroyed most of Spain between 1596-1602. The activity of the Chamber of Castille took place in this context as the process of application and granting of a great number of clerkships sold in this period was carried out by Royal Mercy.
