La identidad republicana de la masonería respondía a distintos aspectos que se resumen en la democracia; sin embargo, la culminación del proceso democrático iba más lejos que la misma República ya que concernía las bases del comportamiento sociopolítico de toda la sociedad. De aquí que el apoyo de las logias a la Liga Española de los Derechos del Hombre fuera el substrato moral y jurídico de aquella República. En Castilla y León, para los masones, la libertad era anterior a la República, pero sin ella no había libertad.
Free masonry's republican identity rested on different aspects emboied in world democracy. The democratic process, however, went beyond the Republic itself, for it based concerned the sociopolitical behaviour of the entire Spanish society. This led the Lodges to lay a particular stress on the Human Rights League which has been the moral and legal susbtratum of this Republic. In Castile and Leon, free-masons consider freedom to be prior to the Republic, but could be no freedom without Republic.
