La diplomacia española y la rendición de Malta (1798)

Abstract

El 10 de junio de 1798, tropas de la República francesa, integrantes del Ejército de Oriente, al mando de Napoleón Bonaparte, invade el archipiélago de Malta. La débil resistencia del Gran Maestre de la Orden de San Juan de Jerusalén, provoca que, en el plazo de dos días, se concluya un armisticio y un convenio de capitulación, bajo la mediación de Felipe Amat, representante del rey de España en la isla, donde se impone la voluntad de Bonaparte. La intervención del diplomático español, sin instrucciones superiores, origina una fuerte polémica y compromete a la Corte de Carlos IV frente al resto de monarquías europeas, que acusan a España de haber convenido con Francia en la ocupación de Malta.
