Deporte y política durante el franquismo: el papel del Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores de España siguiendo el movimiento internacional de boicot a Sudáfrica durante los JJOO de México

Abstract

Este artículo tiene por objeto el análisis de la relación entre deporte y política exterior durante el franquismo. El estudio del seguimiento diplomático que el Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores de España realizó del movimiento internacional de boicot a Sudáfrica en los Juegos Olímpicos de México en 1968, ha permitido profundizar en el papel que desempeñó el deporte en la política exterior de Franco. La documentación producida por el Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y las actas de las asambleas del Comité Internacional Olímpico (CIO) han sido las fuentes principales que sustentan esta investigación, y no habían sido utilizadas en trabajos previos. Los resultados principales muestran la importancia que tuvo el deporte dentro del Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores, y permiten avanzar en el conocimiento de las diferentes estrategias utilizadas por el régimen para beneficiarse del impacto del deporte como herramienta diplomática durante los años sesenta.

This article aims to analyze the relation between sport and foreign policy during francoism. The analysis of the diplomatic monitoring of the international movement to boycott South Africa at the México Olympic Games of 1968 carried out by the Spanish Foreign Office offers new insights into the role played by sport in Franco ?s foreign policy. The documentation produced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the minutes of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) meetings have been the main sources, nerver used previously, that support this research. Results show the importance that sport had within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and allow progress in the knowledge of the different strategies used by the regime to take advantage of sport impact as a diplomatic tool during the sixties.
