    Abstract
Taking the notions of the added and the discouraged worker as a starting point, this paper sets out unemployment rates for women in the major European countries taking into account the effect of the economic cycle on their labor supply decisions. First of all a theoret-ical model is elaborated considering an analytical framework of involuntary unemployment in which the hypotheses of the added and the discouraged worker are included. Taking this model as the starting point, an empirical analysis is then carried out using cointegration tech-niques to elaborate unemployment rates which are unbiased with regard to the cyclical evolution of the female labor force. JEL classification: J16, J21, J22, J64. Keywords: Labor supply, economic cycle, involuntary unemployment, gender economics.
