Oro, perlas, brocados... la ostentación en el vestir en la corte de los Reyes Católicos

Abstract

La historiografía se ha empeñado en mostrar la austeridad de la corte de los reyes Católicos. Con la mirada puesta en aspectos más espirituales que materiales se ha querido ver su corte teñida por una cierta pobreza en cuanto a la disponibilidad económica –la reina habría tenido que empeñar sus joyas para que Colón pudiera realizar su primer viaje– y, en consecuencia, por lo que se refiere a su presentación en público. Testimonios como el de Antoine de Lalaing en 1502, que resalta que los reyes se ataviaban con simples paños, han sido interpretados erróneamente. Frente a esto, este ensayo demuestra cómo los monarcas se hicieron con innumerables paños confeccionados con oro y perlas sobre brocados y terciopelos, y procuraron que sus hijas poseyeran magníficos ejemplares que llevaron consigo a las cortes de Borgoña, Inglaterra y Portugal. La ostentación fue la norma.

Historiography has endeavored to show the austerity of the court of Ferdinand and Isabella. taking into account spiritual more than material, aspects, the court has always been considered by a certain poverty in terms of economic availability –the Queen would have had to pawn her jewels for columbus to make his first journey– and, consequently, in regard to her presentation to the public. testimonials like the one of Antoine de Lalaing in 1502, which highlights the catholic Kings were attired with simple clothes have been misinterpreted. Against this, this essay shows how the King and Queen had a great quantity of clothes made with innumerable pearls on gold and brocades and velvets, and also sought their daughters to possess magnificent ones which were brought to the courts of burgundy, England and Portugal by them the boastfulness and luxury were the rules.
