Del plano al espacio. Razones geométricas detrás del Pop-up

Abstract

Desde su producción masiva en los años 70, los pop-ups llevan sorprendiendo con sus originales geometrías a niños y adultos por igual. Principalmente conocidos por su uso en libros ilustrados, su diseño sigue siendo artesanal y derivado de la sucesión de pruebas y errores. Esto hace que la construcción de pop-ups auto-eréctiles pueda llegar a ser trabajosa e ineficiente sin un adecuado conocimiento de sus propiedades espaciales. Dada la inherente cualidad geométrica de los pop-ups, este trabajo describe las transformaciones espaciales de los distintos componentes de las estructuras de papel plegable, al abatirse el plano que las contiene. Buscando establecer los fundamentales geométricos del pop-up para comprender su construcción y propiedades móviles.

Pop-up books have been entertaining children with their playful mechanics since their mass production in the 1970s. Mostly known for their use in illustrated books, their design is still primarily artisanal and has hitherto been labor intensive with tasks of trials and errors. The constructions of collapsible pop-up structures can be demanding and inefficient without adequate knowledge of their geometric properties, thus the need to comprehend and unveil them. Given their inherent geometric nature, this thesis describes the spatial transformations undergone by the different basic components of collapsible paper structures when the plane that contains them is unfolded. With the objective of unveiling the geometric fundamentals of pop-ups as means to comprehending their construction and mobile properties.
