English Works in Spanish Libraries through the Inventories

Abstract

The aim of this undergraduate dissertation is to analyze the presence of English works in the private libraries of Melchor Gaspar de Jovellanos, Benito Bails and Pedro Rodríguez de Campomanes. The backwardness of Spain compared to Europe was reflected in the society, the politics, and the culture of the country. Different events occurring between Spain and England affected the exchange and the free circulation of the literary works between both countries, the lack of English works in Spain could be justified and explained because of that. Nevertheless, English works can be found in these private libraries. A data-oriented analysis based on the inventories of these libraries, is going to show what works have been found, the topics, the authors and the language. In addition,

El principal objetivo de este trabajo de fin de grado es analizar la presencia de libros ingleses en las bibliotecas privadas de Melchor Gaspar de Jovellanos, Benito Bails y Pedro Rodríguez de Campomanes. El atraso de España en comparación con Europa se reflejó en la sociedad, la política y la cultura del país. Diferentes hechos ocurridos entre España e Inglaterra afectaron el intercambio y la libre circulación de las obras literarias entre ambos países, por eso la falta de obras inglesas en España podría justificarse y explicarse. No obstante, se pueden encontrar obras en inglés en estas bibliotecas privadas. Un análisis basado en los datos obtenidos de los inventarios de estas bibliotecas va a mostrar qué trabajos se han encontrado, los temas, los autores y el idioma. Además, se van a exponer las circunstancias de la llegada de estos títulos al país.
