Del diseño a la arquitectura de Eileen Gray

Abstract

Este trabajo estudia y analiza la obra de Eileen Gray, una de las referentes en diseño y arquitectura de la primera mitad del siglo XX. Es necesario conocer su biografía y comprender el contexto, tanto histórico como artístico y arquitectónico en el que se desarrolla su vida, para así poder entender y llegar a profundizar en su trabajo. Para ello, se comienza detallando el proceso de aprendizaje por el cual Eileen Gray destaca en el diseño de mobiliario. Sus inicios conociendo la técnica del lacado urushi condicionan la evolución de sus diseños, evolucionando de un estilo Art-Decó, a un mobiliario con formas más sencillas y más cercano a los diseños del Movimiento Moderno y otras vanguardias, pero siempre desde una visión artesanal y buscando la personalidad propia. La ejecución de varias reformas de interiores le acerca al ámbito de la arquitectura, construyendo dos viviendas de nueva planta que se analizan en este trabajo. En primer lugar, entre los años 1926 y 1929, construye, ayudada por el arquitecto Jean Badovici, E.1027, una vivienda pensada para la vida social, el trabajo y el ocio. El proyecto se emplaza en Roquebrune, sobre los acantilados a escasos metros del mar, siendo las vistas uno de los puntos más fuertes. Solo tres años después, comienza las obras de la que sería su última obra. Entre 1932 y 1934, Eileen Gray diseña y construye Tempe á Pailla, vivienda que se sitúa solo a 10km de la anterior. Comparándolas se puede comprobar el cambio entre ellas y como Eileen Gray, en esta ocasión, proyecta una vivienda más madura, diseñada para ella, para su modo de vivir, trabajar y descansar. Gracias a esta investigación se pone en valor el trabajo de una mujer pionera en el campo de la arquitectura y el diseño, comprendiendo su lenguaje propio y evolución.

This work studies and analyses the work of Eileen Gray, one of the leading figures in design and architecture of the first half of the twentieth century. It is necessary to know her biography and to understand the historical, artistic and architectural context in which her life unfolded in order to be able to understand and delve deeper into her work. To this end, we begin by detailing the learning process by which Eileen Gray excelled in furniture design. Her beginnings in the technique of urushi lacquering conditioned the evolution of her designs, evolving from an Art-Deco style to furniture with simpler forms and closer to the designs of the Modern Movement and other avant-garde movements, but always with a handcrafted vision and in search of her own personality. The execution of several interior alterations brought him closer to the field of architecture, building two new dwellings which are analysed in this work. First, between 1926 and 1929, with the help of the architect Jean Badovici, she built E.1027, a house designed for social life, work and leisure. The project was located in Roquebrune, on the cliffs just a few metres from the sea, with the view being one of its strongest points. Only three years later, he began work on what was to be his last project. Between 1932 and 1934, Eileen Gray designed and built Tempe á Pailla, a house only 10 km from the previous one. Comparing them, we can see the change between them and how Eileen Gray, on this occasion, designed a more mature house, designed for her, for her way of living, working and resting. Thanks to this research, the work of a pioneering woman in the field of architecture and design is highlighted, understanding her own language and evolution.
