Revisión documental sobre la atención a personas con Alzéimer y el papel del trabajo social

Abstract

En la actualidad, la sociedad donde vivimos se distingue por el alto nivel de vejez, que provoca diversos problemas de salud y graves enfermedades entre los ancianos, y que supone un aumento de personas que se encuentran en situación de dependencia. Las enfermedades que más se pronuncian son las degenerativas, como el alzhéimer que altera a la capacidad cognitiva, es decir, a la memoria, manera de pensar, movimientos, problemas cardiovasculares y al deterioro de todo el organismo. Estos enfermos abarcan edades entre 65 y 85 años, y a medida que avanza la enfermedad, ven como van perdiendo facultades y como estas aumentan, provocando dependencia entre sus cuidadores familiares. Asimismo, es una enfermedad para la que aún no se encuentra cura, pero que va deteriorando la vida del enfermo, pero también de sus cuidadores, que a pesar de su dedicación y atención hacia el familiar ven como afecta en su propia vida, relaciones sociales, trabajo, salud, ocio y sentimientos. Por lo tanto, en dicho trabajo se analizará el papel del trabajador social y su intervención de calidad con los enfermos de alzhéimer, la sobrecarga a la que se ven expuestos sus cuidadores y los recursos que pueden emplear para mejorar la situación tanto del enfermo como de sus cuidadores.

At present, the society where we live is distinguished by the high level of old age, which causes various health problems and serious diseases among the elderly, and that supposes an increase of people who are in a situation of dependence. The diseases that are most pronounced are degenerative, such as Alzheimer's that alters cognitive ability, that is, memory, way of thinking, movements, cardiovascular problems and the deterioration of the whole organism. These patients range in age from 65 to 85 years, and as progress the disease, they see how they are losing faculties and how these increase, causing dependence among their family caregivers. It is also a disease for which no cure has yet been found, but which is deteriorating the life of the patient, but also of their caregivers, who despite of their dedication and attention to the family member see how it affects their own life, social relationships, work, health, leisure and feelings. Therefore, in this work the role of the social worker and his quality intervention with Alzheimer's patients will be analyzed, the overload to which their caregivers are exposed and the resources they can use to improve the situation of both the patient and their caregivers.
