Boxeo y literatura. Corpus y estudio crítico de las narrativas del boxeador como héroe fracasado en la literatura en español

Abstract

This work is a research throughout the relationship between boxing and literature. Its main goals consist on a new perspective about the literary phenomena produced by the boxer and boxing as literary figure and theme respectively, as well as an inquirement, comprehension and manifestation of such a comparative approach. From a generic point of view, throughout the sport and physical activity, including the historical point of view as well as the different speeches interpretated by the Human and Social Sciences, to help create a contextual frame. This allows us an introduction into the boxing as sport and also as a literary theme. Therefore, from a thematics point of view, an extensive corpus of narrative literary works in Spanish from the 20th and 21st century is employed for this matter and from the biographical and sports journal genre as well, thus, settling the historical and literary perspective in the narrative of sports. This historical exercise allows a kind of treatment in the observation of the narrative of boxing, proving itself not as an isolated phenomena, but as a characteristical and universal writing tradition. From a set of literary works in this matter, there is a selection related to the Spanish and Hispanoamerican literature of which conform the content for the interpretation of this phenomena. For such an analysis, a set of tools from the literary theory and critical mythology, as a multidisciplinary approach, is arranged, for concepts from sociology, philosophy, politics, economy and others operate in this research. Hence, this interpretative methodology grants the possibility to show and prove, on the one hand, the works of literature are bound to the mythical hero’s journey speech and the peculiarity of that journey’s failure in which those goals are missed. On the other hand, hereby such failure is considered to be linked to the decline of the individual in the capitalism inside the mechanism of a culture of progress and success, driven by promises of richness and power which, often, never get fulfilled.

Esta tesis investiga las conexiones entre el boxeo y la literatura. Sus objetivos principales son dar cuenta del fenómeno literario que generan el boxeo y el boxeador como tema y figura literarios, respectivamente, así como indagar, comprender e interpretar dicha manifestación desde un planteamiento comparatista. Partimos de lo genérico, de los conceptos de actividad física y deporte a lo largo del tiempo, tanto desde un punto de vista histórico, como de los discursos que lo han interpretado desde las Ciencias Sociales y Humanas, para crear un contexto referencial. Ello nos permite introducirnos en el boxeo como deporte y también como tema literario. Así, desde una visión tematológica, presentamos un exhaustivo corpus de obras literarias de género narrativo en español de los siglos XX y XXI, al que sumamos otros géneros como el género biográfico y la crónica periodística deportiva, que conforman la perspectiva histórico-literaria de la narrativa de boxeo. Este ejercicio histórico nos permite observar que la narrativa de boxeo, lejos de ser un fenómeno aislado, conforma toda una tradición de escritura de carácter universal. Del conjunto de obras recopiladas, realizamos una selección de obras, pertenecientes tanto a la literatura española como a la hispanoamericana, las cuales conforman el material sobre el que realizar la interpretación del fenómeno. Para dicho análisis, nos valemos de herramientas propias de la teoría literaria y la mitocrítica, pero también de orden interdisciplinar, pues utilizamos conceptos propios de la sociología, la filosofía, la política, la economía, entre otros. El análisis nos permite perfilar y demostrar, por un lado, que la literatura trabajada entronca con el discurso mítico del héroe y el viaje, con la particularidad de que se trata de un héroe fracasado cuyos propósitos se ven truncados. Por otro lado, consideramos que la historia mítica del héroe fracasado entronca con el discurso del fracaso del individuo capitalista en el seno de una cultura del progreso y del éxito, movida por promesas de poder y riqueza que, a menudo, nunca llegan a cumplirse.
