Herzog y De Meuron y el reciclaje de edificios industriales: Tres edificios reciclados por Jacques Herzog y Pierre De Meuron

Abstract

Estudio de la recuperación de edificios con usos industriales a través de tres obras de los arquitectos suizos Herzog & De Meuron: el Tate Modern en Londres, la Filarmónica de Hamburgo y el CaixaForum en Madrid. Dos plantas eléctricas y un almacén portuario, edificios industriales que se reinterpretan y transforman para vincularse al arte: las dos centrales se convierten en museos y el almacén en una filarmónica. Los tres casos representan ejemplos no sólo de reciclaje de edificaciones en desuso, sino de regeneración urbana y la capacidad que tienen esta clase de intervenciones de provocar un impacto positivo en la zona en la que se encuentran implantadas. Esto se consigue mediante la arquitectura y un aprovechamiento magistral de la preexistencia, mediante el juego que realizan los arquitectos con sus volúmenes y espacios. Además de estos tres casos concretos, se estudia la trayectoria de los arquitectos, hablando de su obra e influencias, y se contextualizan los temas tratados: el estado general de los edificios industriales en desuso, sus grados de protección, legislación de aplicación e incluso el contexto social contemporáneo en torno a estos.

A study about the recuperation of industrial buildings through three works by swiss architects Herzog & De Meuron: Tate Modern in London, Hamburg Philharmonic and the CaixaForum building in Madrid. Two power plants and a port warehouse, industrial buildings reinterpreted and transformed to be linked to art: the two power stations are converted into museums and the warehouse into a philharmonic hall. The three cases represent examples not only of the recycling of disused buildings, but also of urban regeneration and the capacity of this type of interventions to cause an impact in the area in which they are located that extends to the entire city. The recycling of the three buildings is achieved via architecture and a masterly use of the pre-existing constructions, through the architect’s plays with their volumes and spaces. In addition to these three cases, the trajectory of the architects is studied, talking about their work and influences, and the topics discussed are contextualized: the state of disused industrial buildings, their protection, legislation and even the contemporary social context around them.
