dc.description.abstract	This article aims to analyze the perception of and the debate surrounding European integration in Portugal, before and after the approval of the Maastricht Treaty, taking into account the country’s identity and political culture. In particular, the article will assess the attitudes of the Portuguese government, political parties and the general public towards the Maastricht Treaty.
