In the last decade, there has been a resurgence of interest in conglomerate effects in response to the growing importance of digital ecosystems, and some recent conglomerate mergers in the digital sector. To understand the scope of this debate and to assess whether we are facing a paradigm shift and, if so, how far-reaching, in this work we analyze how the treatment of conglomerate mergers and the business structures resulting from these operations has evolved, both in the US and in Europe and the challenges ahead.
