El consumo de prestigio de las hijas de los Reyes Católicos: valor y uso de las joyas

Abstract

This doctoral thesis examines the role of jewellery in the lives of the daughters of the Catholic Monarchs, highlighting their importance not only as luxury items but also as diplomatic and political tools. Through the analysis of historical documents such as inventories, letters, and wills, the study seeks to identify the jewellery commissioned by the monarchs for their daughters in order to understand the significance of these objects within the context of the time. An exhaustive search has been conducted to locate the pieces purchased or gifted by the sovereigns, aiming to determine which types of jewellery were popular, what materials and gemstones were preferred, and what symbolic meanings they carried. The use of these precious treasures by the princesses reveals a clear strategy, whereby they demonstrated their origins and reinforced their familial ties.

Esta Tesis Doctoral analiza el papel que jugaron las joyas en la vida de las hijas de los Reyes Católicos, destacando su importancia no solo como objetos de lujo, sino también como herramientas diplomáticas y políticas. A través del análisis de documentos históricos como inventarios, cartas y testamentos, se busca identificar los encargos de joyas realizados por los monarcas para sus hijas con el fin de comprender el significado de estos objetos dentro del contexto de la época. Para ello, se ha hecho una búsqueda exhaustiva de las alhajas que fueron compradas o regaladas por los soberanos para conocer qué tipo de piezas eran populares, qué materiales y gemas preferían y qué significados simbólicos poseían. El uso que hicieron de estos brillantes tesoros indica una clara estrategia a seguir por parte de las infantas, quienes demostraban su origen y reforzaban el vínculo con su familia.
