¿Un linaje sin mayorazgo? La estrategia de transmisión patrimonial de los Hurtado de Mendoza durante la Baja Edad Media

Abstract

En el presente artículo se aborda el estudio de la transmisión patrimonial llevada a cabo por el linaje de los Hurtado de Mendoza desde finales del siglo XIV hasta principios del XVI. Se pondrá el foco principalmente en sus señoríos alaveses, donde el linaje tenía sus solares originarios. A su vez, se planteará la cuestión de si realmente llegaron a fundar un mayorazgo que vinculara su patrimonio y las consecuencias que ello tuvo en el devenir del linaje, al convertirse, a mediados del siglo XVI, en condes de Orgaz.

The present article examines the study of patrimonial transmission conducted by the Hurtado de Mendoza lineage from the late 14th century to the early 16th century. The primary focus will be on their lordships in Álava, where the lineage had its ancestral lands. Additionally, the article will address the question of whether they truly established a primogeniture (mayorazgo) that connected their heritage, and the consequences this had for the lineage's development, culminating in their elevation to the title of Counts of Orgaz in the mid-16th century.
