De la sinagoga a la iglesia: Judíos y conversos en Palencia en la Baja Edad Media

Abstract

El siguiente trabajo pretende analizar la importancia y evolución de la comunidad judía de Palencia y su provincia, durante la Baja Edad Media. En la ciudad de Palencia la comunidad hebrea dependía por concesión real del señorío episcopal, lo que abre la puerta a la existencia de conflictos entre las distintas esferas de poder tanto de orden jurisdiccional como fiscal. Pero la cuestión que ha concentrado nuestro interés es el análisis de la relaciones entre cristianos y judíos y las causas del deterioro de la coexistencia que dará lugar a la expulsión y al posterior problema converso. Como personaje representativo de la ciudad, hemos elegido al cronista Alfonso Fernández de Palencia, de origen judeoconverso, nacido en las primeras décadas del siglo XV. Las conclusiones finales pretenden dar respuesta a los interrogantes e hipótesis planteados al inicio del trabajo.

The following work aims to analyze the importance and evolution of the jewish community of Palencia and its province during the late Middle Ages. In the city of Palencia the Jewish community depended on the royal concession of the episcopal lordship, which opens the door to the existence of conflicts between the different spheres of power, both jurisdictional and fiscal. But the question that has concentrated our interest is the analysis of the relations between christians and jews and the causes of the deterioration of the coexistence that will give rise to the expulsion and the later converso problem. As a representative character of the city, we have chosen the chronicler Alfonso Fernández de Palencia, of jewish-converse origin, born in the first decades of the 15th century. The final conclusions aim to answer the questions and hypotheses raised at the beginning of this work.
