Abstract

The author explores the curse texts from Cyprus, written on lead or selenite, preserved in the British Museum, its spelling, content, formulas, magic words, orthographic mistakes and linguistic peculiarities, which lead to the conclusion that they are work of a professional, perhaps Jewish, magician, which operated in Amathous about end 2nd - or early 3d century A.D. The texts have parallels with the magical papyri and other contemporary curse texts from the eastern Mediterranean (Rhodes, Cnidus), Rome and North Africa (Carthage, Egypt).
