A Irmandade de São Tomás de Vila Nova da cidade de Coimbra (1687-1707)

Abstract

O aparecimento do culto a São Tomás de Vila Nova, em Coimbra, remonta à segunda metade do século XVII. A chegada à cidade de uma relíquia e uma imagem de roca do santo, provenientes de Valência, no dia 18 de janeiro de 1687, levou à fundação de uma irmandade dedicada a este, por iniciativa do cabido de Coimbra, em novembro do mesmo ano. Foi instalada no altar da invocação do seu orago, com fins devocionais, na igreja paroquial da Sé. O presente trabalho tem como finalidade o estudo desta confraria, através da abordagem ao cartório, irmãos, lideranças e contas da irmandade.

The appearance of the cult to Saint Thomas of Villanova, in Coimbra, dates back to the second half of the 17th century. The arrival in the city of a relic and a rock statue of the saint, from Valencia, on January 18th, 1687, led to the founding of a brotherhood dedicated to him, on the initiative of the chapter of Coimbra, in November of the same year. It was installed on the altar of the invocation of its patron, for devotional purposes, in the parish church of the Sé. The purpose of this work is to study this confraternity, through an approach to the registry office, brothers, leaders and accounts of the brotherhood.
