Del Arca de la Alianza al Templo sobre ruedas. El carro triunfal del Corpus Christi de la catedral de Ávila, una obra vallisoletana

Abstract

El gusto por el espectáculo y la teatralidad en época barroca fomentaron la difusión de maquinarias y estructuras móviles durante las fiestas del Corpus Christi para sustituir las tradicionales andas procesionales. Llegaron a presentar una gran complejidad técnica, riqueza y suntuosidad para realzar el valor estético de la custodia de plata y también participaban de un mensaje alegórico al servicio de la exaltación eucarística. Es el caso del carro triunfal de la catedral de Ávila, una pieza todavía en uso que aúna funcionalidad y simbolismo. La documentación inédita manejada nos permite situar su proceso de realización en Valladolid, conocer a los artífices, los promotores y los costes, entre otros datos.

The interest in spectacle and theatricality in the Baroque period encouraged the spread of machinery and mobile structures during the Corpus Christi festivities to replace the traditional processional frames. They became technically complex, rich and sumptuous in order to enhance the aesthetic value of the silver monstrance and also participated in an allegorical message at the service of the Eucharistic exaltation. This is the case of the triumphal chariot in the cathedral of Ávila, a piece still in use today that combines functionality and symbolism. The unpublished documentation allows us to situate the process of making it in Valladolid, to know the artists, the promoters and the costs, among other data.
