«Me desgarraron las entrañas». San Juan de los Reyes y los textiles del monumento funerario de Isabel I de Castilla

Abstract

El monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes se erigió como un espacio simbólico en la memoria de Isabel I de Castilla. Aunque los cenotafios regios no fueron ejecutados, el monumento funerario mantuvo viva su presencia a lo largo de la Edad Moderna. Los paños fúnebres, elaborados con terciopelos y brocados, reflejaban el poder y la magnificencia textil a la vez que cumplían con el ideal de austeridad expresado por la reina en su testamento. Este estudio analiza el papel de los textiles en la escenografía funeraria y su vinculación con la tradición Habsburgo y la imagen regia.

The Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes became a symbolic space in the memory of Isabella I of Castile. Although the royal cenotaphs were never executed, the funerary monument preserved her presence throughout the Early Modern period. The funeral cloths, made of velvet and brocade, reflected power and textile magnificence while also adhering to the queen’s testamentary wish for austerity. This study examines the role of textiles in the funerary scenography and their connection to the Habsburg tradition and royal imagery.
