¿Subversión o normatividad? Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda y sus novelas en la España isabelina

Abstract

Sin lugar a duda, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda destacó en su época tanto por la relevancia que adquirió en los círculos más selectos de la sociedad isabelina como por sus incuestionables éxitos literarios, que han hecho de ella una figura clave del Romanticismo hispanoamericano. En este artículo se aborda cómo contribuyó a la configuración del discurso liberal sobre el orden sexuado de la sociedad desde esa posición privilegiada, analizando sus novelas y el influjo que en ellas tuvieron su propia vida y el contexto histórico, para tratar de comprender por qué transitó desde la incuestionable subversión de sus primeros trabajos al aparente conservadurismo de sus últimos años.

Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda undoubtedly stood out in her time both for the relevance she acquired in the most select circles of Elizabethan society and for her unquestionable literary successes, which have made her a key figure in Spanish-American Romanticism. This article examines how she contributed to the configuration of the liberal discourse on the gendered order of society from that privileged position, analysing her novels and the influence that her own life and the historical context had on them, in an attempt to understand why she moved from the unquestionable subversion of her early works to the apparent conservatism of her later years.
