La racionalidad económica capitalista y la cosmovisión hispanocatólica: la Norteamérica española (siglos XVI-XVIII)

Abstract

En las últimas décadas, algunos historiadores han llamado la atención sobre el carácter capitalista de la economía de Nueva España durante el siglo XVIII; este hecho obligaría a reexaminar muchas de las asunciones clásicas acerca del surgimiento del capitalismo. En este trabajo, resumiremos la historia de la economía novohispana centrándonos en el papel de élites económicas en la Norteamérica española y en el Bajío, así como en su relación con el catolicismo. En líneas generales, expondremos un contraargumento a las tradicionales tesis weberianas a través del ejemplo de la sociedad y las élites novohispanas.

During the last decades, some historians have drawn the attention to the capitalist characteristics of the economy in New Spain during the 18th century; this would compel us to re-examine many classic assumptions about the emergence of capitalism. In this paper, we will summarize the history of the economy of New Spain, focusing on the role of the economic elites in the Spanish North America and el Bajío, as well as their connection to Catholicism. Broadly speaking, we will present a counter argument to the traditional weberian thesis through the example of the society and the elites of New Spain.
