Abstract

Carlos Ibáñez e Ibáñez de Ibero fue una figura sobresaliente de la ciencia española en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Ingeniero militar de formación, destacó como geodesta y experto en metrología, y alcanzó un papel relevante en la cooperación científica internacional en el ámbito de la geodesia y en la difusión del sistema métrico. Fundador y director del Instituto Geográfico y Estadístico entre 1870 y 1889, su participación fue decisiva en el proceso de modernización de la información geográfica en España. Este artículo examina los aspectos principales de su biografía profesional, poniendo énfasis en su papel como gestor institucional.

Carlos Ibáñez e Ibáñez de Ibero was a prominent figure in Spanish science in the second half of the 19th century. A military engineer by training, he distinguished himself as a geodesist and metrology expert, and played a leading role in international scientific cooperation in the field of geodesy and in the dissemination of the metric system. Founder and director of the Geographic and Statistical Institute between 1870 and 1889, his participation was decisive in the modernization of geographic information in Spain. This article examines the main aspects of his professional biography, emphasizing his role as an institutional manager.
