El presente trabajo se refiere a las políticas de redimensionamiento implementadas para la red ferroviaria estatal de Argentina (1948-1989). Estas políticas respondieron a un diagnóstico que enfatizó la baja densidad de tráfico del sistema, pero también al perentorio requerimiento de reducir el déficit operacional del ferrocarril. En total, se retiró del servicio no menos del 22% del tendido total. El recorte afectó sobre todo a la red de la región más densamente poblada del país, eliminado presumiblemente líneas redundantes. A pesar de esta política, la densidad de tráfico no se incrementó, y el déficit mostró una trayectoria creciente en el período. Se estima que la política de focalización en determinados tráficos (vgr., graneles) fue contraproducente, precisamente por tratarse de una configuración de baja densidad.
This paper addresses the resizing policies carried out for the Argentina’s state owned railway (1948-1989). These policies stemmed from a diagnosis focused on the low traffic density of the network; but also there was a peremptory pressure for reducing the deficit of the railway operation. Overall, some 22% of the network was scrapped. The cutout involved mainly the network placed in the most populate area of the country; presumably, redundant lines were suppressed. Despite this policy, traffic density did not increase, and deficit showed a growing trend during the period. We suggest that the concentration of efforts in selected traffics (for example, bulks) was counterproductive, precisely due to the low density of the network.
