El ajuar de los hijos de San Antolín (Palencia, 1790-1810)

Abstract

Fueron muchos los niños que a lo largo del siglo XVIII se vieron obligados a vivir de la caridad dentro de las inclusas, lugares que se encargaban de acogerlos, alimentarlos y vestirlos. El estudio de las ropas y de los objetos con los que eran abandonados en Palencia permite conocer no solo cuál era el atuendo típico que portaban los niños sino también el acercarse al mundo de las mentalidades y por supuesto al de las supersticiones que tan presentes estaban en la vida cotidiana de las gentes. El hecho de que en el inventario de sus ropas se hallen algunos objetos de protección hace pensar que los afectos estaban más presentes de lo que la historiografía advierte.

There were many children who, throughout the 18th century, were forced to live on charity within the foundling homes, places responsible for welcoming them, feeding them, and clothing them. The study of the clothes and objects with which they were abandoned in Palencia, allows us to know, not only what the typical attire of the children was, but also to approach the world of mentalities and of course the world of superstitions that were so present in the life of the people. The fact that some protective objects were found in the inventory of his clothes suggests that the affections were more present than we think.
