Marcel Breuer, el origen de sus tipologías domésticas: La década experimental y los concursos de posguerra

Abstract

After the end of the Second World War, architecture assumed the challenge of transforming the armaments industry into a productive model oriented toward social welfare. This challenge was marked by a context of economic growth and profound cultural transformation, which encouraged the search for new ways of living. In this scenario, housing competitions promoted by specialized magazines became established as new platforms for experimentation, where innovative domestic solutions aimed at improving the quality of life of the middle class were presented. Among them, architect Marcel Breuer developed a series of experimental housing projects between 1940 and 1950, combining modernity and tradition. This period, referred to in this research as the “experimental decade,” is characterized by intense typological exploration and by the creation of prototypes that anticipated the archetypes of his binuclear houses and long houses. Therefore, the objective of this study is to demonstrate that these proposals constitute the formal precedents of his later domestic architecture. The research is fundamentally based on documentation preserved by the Marcel Breuer Digital Archive and Smithsonian Archives of American Art, used as the basis for the restoration of the projects. This methodology makes it possible to redraw and, in some cases, recreate works that were never built and others that were realised, in order to understand their design process. These houses are also analyzed and compared to establish a classification based on their common features, identifying their similarities and resemblances. In this way, the reinterpretation of Breuer’s postwar domestic projects is presented as a new opportunity to recover more humane, flexible and adaptable criteria for the development of new dwellings in our time. It provides a critical and design-oriented framework from which to interpret its spatial and construction strategies, with the aim of generating more responsible housing models that are better suited to the needs of contemporary society, capable of addressing the domestic crisis of the 21st century.

Tras el fin de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la arquitectura asumió el desafío de convertir la industria armamentística en un modelo productivo orientado al bienestar social. Este reto estuvo marcado por un contexto de crecimiento económico y profunda transformación cultural, que impulsó la búsqueda de nuevas formas de habitar. En este escenario, los concursos de vivienda promovidos por revistas especializadas se consolidaron como nuevos medios para la experimentación, donde se presentaron soluciones domésticas innovadoras destinadas a mejorar la calidad de vida de la clase media. Entre ellos, el arquitecto Marcel Breuer desarrolló un conjunto de viviendas experimentales entre 1940 y 1950, donde combinaba modernidad y tradición. Este periodo, denominado en la presente investigación como “década experimental”, se caracteriza por una intensa exploración tipológica y por la creación de prototipos que anticipan los arquetipos de sus binuclear houses y long houses. Por tanto, el objetivo de este estudio es demostrar que dichas propuestas constituyen los precedentes formales de su arquitectura doméstica posterior. La investigación se apoya fundamentalmente en la documentación conservada por el Marcel Breuer Digital Archive y Smithsonian Archives of American Art, empleada como base para la restitución de los proyectos. Esta metodología permite redibujar y, en algunos casos recrear, obras que no llegaron a construirse y otras que sí lo hicieron, con el fin de comprender su proceso proyectual. Asimismo, se analizan y comparan estas viviendas para establecer una clasificación basada en los invariantes presentes en ellas, identificando sus similitudes. De este modo, la relectura de los proyectos domésticos de posguerra de Breuer se presenta como una nueva oportunidad para recuperar criterios más humanos, flexibles y adaptables a nuestro tiempo en el desarrollo de nuevas viviendas. Se ofrece una base crítica y proyectual desde la que interpretar sus estrategias espaciales y constructivas, con el fin de generar modelos habitacionales más responsables y ajustados a las necesidades de la sociedad contemporánea, capaces de hacer frente a la crisis doméstica del siglo XXI.
