Hendrick de Clerck: Una serie de Las Artes Liberales identificada en el Monasterio de El Escorial y algunas anotaciones a nuevas obras suyas en España

Abstract

La Serie de las Artes Liberales de El Escorial se atribuye a Hendrick de Clerck, se determina su fuente de inspiración en grabados de Wierix, según dibujos de Primaticcio, y se fija su procedencia de la colección del príncipe Mansfeld. Su presencia en la colección real española es recogida por los inventarios del palacio de El Pardo. Se visualiza la serie completa por medio de copias antiguas y de los grabados. Se añaden al corpus de H. de Clerck nuevas obras localizadas en colecciones privadas españolas (El Paraíso con los Cuatro Elementos, Caín y Abel, Los Desposorios Místicos de Santa Catalina, La Continencia de Escipión) y un Descendimiento, del Monasterio de la Encarnación de Madrid. De otras obras suyas existen referencias documentales en catálogos del siglo XIX, inventario s reales del Alcázar y de El Escorial, y en la testamentaría de don Diego de Mexía Marqués de Leganés. La ocasión permite también ahondar en algunas fuentes de grabados y esculturas.

The Liberal Arts Series (in El Escorial Monastery) is here attributed to Hendrick de Clerck. This research reveals his sources of inspiration as the engravings of Wierix and establishes their origin as that of the collection of Prince Mansfeld. Their presence in the Spanish Royal collection is found in the inventories of the Palace of El Pardo. The complete series can be seen by means of old copies and the engravings by Wierix after Primaticcio. To the corpus of Hendrick de Clerck are added new works found in private Spanish collections (Paradise with the Four Elements, Cain and Abel, The Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine, The Continence of Scipio and The Descent from the Cross, from the Monastery of La Encarnación in Madrid. Of his other works there exist documentary references in catalogues from the 19th century, royal inventories from the Alcázar and El Escorial and in the testamentary of Diego de Mexía, Marques of Leganes. The occasion also allows us to study in depth some of the sources of the engravings and sculptures.
